PHOTOS: Three Salisbury Teens' Fundraising Trek to Ukraine

Three teenagers from Salisbury have reached Frankfurt as they continue their 1,200-mile humanitarian on-foot trek to Ukraine.

James McCarthy-Hill, Kyle Spring, and Adam Mitchell arrived in the German city yesterday, marking a major milestone in their ambitious walk from Salisbury Cathedral to Lviv, Ukraine.

Their journey is part of the Step2Ukraine campaign, a grassroots humanitarian effort to raise awareness, support, and vital aid for civilians impacted by the ongoing war in the second largest country in Europe.

The team set off on June 29th have been walking an average of 24 miles a day. To get to Frankfurt they travelled through the UK, France, Belgium, and Germany.  Salisbury Radio understands that the next country to walk through will be Poland, before arriving in Ukraine.

The former Wyvern St Edmund’s students have currently achieved over half of their £10,000 fundraising target.  Their efforts are being supported by Justin Ukraine Aid, a volunteer-led charity operating inside Ukraine.

“We’re walking because the people of Ukraine don’t have the option to walk away,” said James. “We want to show them - and the world - that we haven’t forgotten.”

The group plans to reach Ukraine by late August, where they will spend a week delivering medical supplies, food, and essential resources to families and children in need.

Despite challenging weather and sore feet, the trio has been buoyed by the generosity of strangers and an outpouring of support online.  Before leaving Salisbury, Adam had a chance meeting with a Ukrainian doctor at the Salisbury Walk-in Centre, the doctor was kind enough to provide some medical supplies for them to take to their final destination.

The 18 year-olds are documenting every step of their journey on Instagram, here.

“We’re just three mates with backpacks and a goal,” said Kyle. “But every donation, every cheer from the roadside - it keeps us moving forward.”

Adam from Winterslow added, “We want to turn every mile into something meaningful. Every step is for someone who’s lost a home, a loved one, or a sense of safety.”
