Over 1000 people sign petition to stop toilet closure

Around 1500 people have signed a petition calling for Salisbury City Council to halt plans to close toilets in the city centre.

The petition started on change.org, was launched on Thursday (15th January) last week by Salisbury resident Simon Turner and has been shared widely on local social media groups.

It comes after Salisbury City Council agreed at a budget meeting to close the toilets below the Market Place and those in Central Car Park.

The petition reflects lots of the comments circling locally and states, "Salisbury council have decided that they wish to close the central car park toilets and the market square toilets to save money.

"Whilst I am aware of other toilets in the town I feel that this would be detrimental to businesses and the tourism industry within Salisbury. I would like you to sign this petition calling for Salisbury council to reconsider."

Some of the people who have commented on the petition have added the following comments:

Monica Wilson added, "This is a basic need for visitors, shoppers, tradespeople on the market, in addition especially elderly, disabled, diabetic and those with small children. Salisbury needs everything it can reasonably offer to keep it an attractive City where people want to visit. The market square particularly needs to keep such facilities to support markets, pop-up bars and other events. Please urgently reconsider this idea as a priority."

Angela Britten said, "Councils have a duty of care to the people they are supposed to be representing. There are many other things, including their expenses, that can be stopped or cut back on before such a draconian measure."
