Fundraiser Announced to Support Woman Living with Rare Illness After Government Funding Cut

A local woman is in urgent need of community support after losing government-funded medical assistance for a debilitating and rare condition.

Cat Burton, who suffers from a little-known illness called Behçet's Disease, is now facing a serious decline in health as her access to vital care has been withdrawn.

Behçet's Disease is a rare and complex autoimmune disorder that affects the nervous and muscular systems, often leaving those who suffer from it in chronic pain, extreme fatigue, and limited mobility. Due to its rarity,  Behçet's Disease receives little public attention and even less research funding, making diagnosis and treatment difficult. For Cat, the condition has been life-altering.

Until recently, Cat received specialised support through a now-defunded healthcare programme. With the withdrawal of funding, her condition has worsened rapidly, and she is now in desperate need of private care, therapies, and essential mobility aids.

To raise awareness and help fund Cat’s urgent medical needs, a community-led fundraiser will be held on Saturday, 31st May, at Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Course. The golf club has generously provided the venue free of charge, and many other vendors are coming together to give time and prizes for a raffle that will take place on the night.

The evening will feature live performances, raffles, and refreshments, with all proceeds going directly toward Cat’s care.

“We refuse to let Cat be forgotten or left behind because her illness isn’t well-known,” said one of her friends within Evolution Choir.

“She deserves to live with dignity and receive the treatment she needs. This is about giving her a fighting chance.”

The community is urged to come along, show their support, and help make a real difference in the life of someone who urgently needs it.

If you cannot attend but would still like to help, you can make donations online through the Eventbrite link.
