Young Gallery launches vibrant screenprints exhibition

INTERCHANGE, Series 23, Version Orange, and INTERCHANGE, Series 17, Version Vermilion by Julia Atkinson,

A colourful new print exhibition will soon be coming to the Young Gallery, Salisbury.

INTERCHANGE by Julia Atkinson (born 1943) is a series of screenprints exploring colour interaction.

They will be displayed in Gallery 2 from 23rd May. These bright artworks were made by printing the colours of the spectrum through a stencil of parallel lines onto different backgrounds. The result causes some colours to merge while others catch the viewer’s eye.

Atkinson produced these works in the 1970s, experimenting with different surfaces and materials, using a variety of stripes and patterns. She had long been fascinated with colour, creating new colours by mixing different pigments, and later experimenting with optical colour mixing in her print work. Atkinson said, ‘screen printing is the perfect technique for portraying pure flat colour.’

In 2024, Atkinson kindly donated these 15 artworks to the Young Gallery, and this exhibition marks the first time they have been on public display there.

It is free to visit, and no booking is required. The exhibition runs until 6th September and is accompanied by a free family trail.

Julia Atkinson said, "I am so pleased to see the INTERCHANGE series exhibited at the Young Gallery. These proved to be popular when I first created them in the 1970s and continue to be so now. I am grateful that they have found a permanent home in the Young Gallery's collection in Salisbury."

Dr Emily Dunbar, Curator and Gallery Manager, said: “This exhibition showcases the pure vibrancy of colour and these artworks are a valued addition to the Young Gallery’s significant print collection.”
