The new year will see the start of an essential project to upgrade the gas network in Salisbury.
The work in Wilton Road will ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
The project involves replacing old metal mains that have reached the end of their useful lives with new plastic pipe. This new pipe is less prone to damage and will ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for the community for decades to come.
Following close consultation between SGN and Wiltshire Council, works will start on Monday, 5th January and last for approximately 20 weeks, completing in May. To do this safely, work will be carried out in two phases, requiring traffic management.

Phase one: Monday 5 January – End of May, 2026
Engineers will be working in the westbound lane of Wilton Road from the junction of Gorringe Road to Windsor Street.
Temporary traffic lights will be in operation around the work area as progress is made along Wilton Road.
This will mean:
- Bus stop suspensions will be in operation within our work areas
- Temporary traffic lights will be manned between peak hours
- Traffic delays are possible; we’d advise road users to plan ahead
Phase two: Monday 13 April – Sunday 10 May 2026
Wilton Road from the junction of Windsor Street to St Paul’s Roundabout.
There will be a one-way westbound directional road closure in place.
This will mean:
- No through vehicle access past the closure heading westbound from St Paul’s roundabout towards Wilton Road
- A diversion route will be in place for westbound vehicle traffic
- Eastbound traffic will remain unaffected
- Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained
- Bus routes will be affected heading westbound on Wilton Road – passengers are advised to contact their service provider for the latest information
- Resident/business access to properties located within the closure will be maintained, and teams will liaise directly with those affected regarding local access arrangements
- Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless you are advised otherwise by your service provider
An SGN spokesperson said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work, and we will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential project.
“We appreciate that work in this area is sensitive and roadworks can be frustrating; we recognise this and are doing everything we can to get this essential work done as quickly and as safely as possible. We’d like to thank everyone affected for your patience, understanding and support as we work to improve the energy infrastructure in Salisbury.”
