Salisbury succumb to late Maidstone goal at the Mac

Salisbury suffered a late defeat at the hands of Maidstone United thanks to a goal from substitute Sesay in the 83rd minute.

The first half was hardly a vintage display from either side as there was just one shot on goal apiece before the half-hour mark.

Maidstone could have opened the scoring through Tanga after he found himself in the Salisbury box for a shot which went narrowly wide.

The first half became a tug of war of possession, with the visitors earning the best chance of the half with a penalty on the half-hour mark after a rare mistake from Salisbury skipper Revan.

Faal’s penalty, however, was denied by a heroic save from Buse in between the Salisbury sticks, saving the hosts from going a goal down.

The rest of the opening 45 minutes became stop-start as a result of a successful high defensive line from Brian Dutton’s side.

Coming out of the interval, it was the White turn to have a chance on goal, as Salisbury left-back McIntyre played a diagonal ball to newcomer Penn, who was able to strike just wide of the target across goal.

The visitors' pressure mounted, and the Salisbury defence was met with a wave of attacks which were swept clear from the hosts.

However, the Stones were able to find the breakthrough via the substitute Sesay after receiving a through ball from winger Tanga to tap past Buse and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Up next for Brian Dutton's side is a trip to Hornchurch on Tuesday evening (3rd March). There will be full commentary on Salisbury Radio Sport.
