Bird Flu detected in Amesbury

A case of highly pathogenic Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) has been confirmed in captive birds near Amesbury, Salisbury.

The announcement was made by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) on 23rd October 2022.

To try and contain the disease, a 3km captive bird monitoring zone in the area has been declared. Government health agencies have confirmed that all poultry on the premises will be humanely culled.

Within these zones, bird movements and gatherings are restricted and all holdings that keep birds must be declared.

Legal requirements to record biosecurity, keeping, and the cleaning and disinfection of vehicles are also in place. Birdkeepers are being urged to remain vigilant and ensure high levels of biosecurity.
