Bonnymead Play Park in Amesbury has reopened following a £500,000 refurbishment.
Set on the banks of the River Avon, the park on the Recreation Ground has existed for many decades and was in desperate need of refurbishment.
In 2025, the Town Council prioritised this park for refurbishment and embarked on a procurement process, allocating funds from within its reserves.
With a design by Proludic, which included amendments to incorporate more accessible equipment following public feedback, the contractors moved on site in mid-April to remove the existing equipment and begin installing the exciting new equipment. The old exercise equipment has been recycled and moved to Lord’s Walk; old fencing and gates will be repurposed, and the benches and tables have been re-sited and offered to local groups in the community.
Friday marked the official opening of the play park; it’s a huge transformation and a massive investment, providing many years of play for children in the Town and beyond.
Explore the seven different zones: Junior Zone, Sensory Zone, Swing Zone, Teen Zone, Ninja Zone and Copper Tree Kingdom, which boasts a double tower adventure unit and read the local heritage-themed story book.
The Mayor of Amesbury, Cllr Laura Knight, said, "Bonnymead Play Park’s refurbishment represents a major step forward in how we design inclusive public spaces in Amesbury. Our recent accessibility audit was central to this work.
"It gave us a clearer understanding of the barriers families were facing and directly shaped the choices we made, ensuring the new layout and equipment support children with a wide range of needs. The audit has also become a foundation for how we will approach all future play provision, helping us create spaces that are welcoming, usable and enjoyable for everyone.
"Seeing Bonnymead transformed is incredibly rewarding. The new zones, the accessible features and the thoughtful design reflect the community’s feedback and the Council’s commitment to wellbeing and inclusion. We are genuinely excited to open this space and proud to offer a play environment that will support local families for many years to come".
