Children from schools across Salisbury and South Wiltshire descended on Wyvern St Edmund's playing fields on Saturday (18th May) to take part in the 2024 Schools Mini-Marathon.
They were also joined by a good number of parents and teachers who took part in the adults' race, with around 1,300 runners in total.
Runners were grouped into two-year groups, with girls and boys running in races for under 9s and also under 11s. The younger age group ran first, just after the adult race had finished.
All five races saw some good competitive running, with some great pace shown off the line. The young runners sprinted from the start line as they left the playing field before the field spread as they traversed hills of the Laverstock downs.
Runners returned onto the playing fields, flanked by hundreds of cheering parents and teachers who lined the straight run to the finish line.
The adult race saw a good number of runners in fancy dress with some sumo wrestlers, a selection of animals and one pair running it three-legged.
The event is organised by a committee of teachers from across the area, headed by Winterbourne Earls's head teacher, Philippa Carter. She said, "The children have loved it. The event has gone really well.
"The under nines and under 11s ran at such a great pace, pushing the pacing runners from Wyvern St Edmunds hard. The parents and children seem to have enjoyed the event, and it has run smoothly."
