Driver caught doing double speed limit during Salisbury day of action

A driver has been summoned to court after they were caught doing 64 mph on a 30-limit road during a roads policing day of action in Salisbury.

This is just one example of the 125 offences recorded by officers during Project Zero in the south of Wiltshire last Wednesday (19th February).

Project Zero is a weekly campaign that aims to reduce road fatalities in the county.

It focuses on drivers who commit the Fatal Five offences, which include speeding, drink/drug driving, using a mobile phone while driving, driving without a seat belt and driving carelessly/dangerously.

Essentially, motorists should expect to see many officers on the roads and parked at offence hotspots in the allocated Project Zero area on the day of action.

This acts as both a deterrent and allows us to effectively police law-breaking drivers in areas of the county which are not usually as heavily policed.

During the latest Project Zero, officers from Wiltshire's Roads Policing Unit, Serious Collision Investigation Team and Speed Watch Enforcement were deployed to problematic roads in the Salisbury area.

Some highlighted areas included Odstock Road, Downton Road, The Avenue in Wilton and Coombe Bissett.

A total of 125 offences were recorded, including:

  • 117 speeding offences
  • 3 seat belt offences
  • 3 drivers with no insurance
  • 1 driver using a mobile phone while driving
  • 1 driver with no valid MOT

The fastest speed was recorded on The Avenue where a driver was clocked travelling 64 miles-per-hour on the 30-limit road.

Other notable speeding statistics from the day include:

  • 81 speed awareness courses offered
  • 30 fixed penalty notices of £100 and licences endorsed with 3 penalty points
  • 6 court summons issued to drivers caught at 64mph, 55mph, 54mph, 53mph, 52mph and 51mph

If you are aware of a speeding hot-spot in your area which you'd like Wiltshire Police to come and visit, please report it to 101 or visit the Wiltshire Police website Report | Wiltshire Police.
